How to activate the Chase Freedom quarterly 5% categories
Chase Freedom Flex's rotating 5% categories must be activated each quarter: online, in the Chase Mobile app, by phone, at a branch, or from a reminder email you sign up for. Chase sets each deadline. Chase describes Freedom Unlimited as offering consistent rates; its page lists set earning rates rather than quarterly categories to activate.[5][1][4]
Which Chase Freedom cards have quarterly 5% categories?
Freedom Flex is the card with rotating categories among the Freedom cards on Chase's current card page. Chase describes it as earning 5% on categories that rotate each quarter, on purchases up to a combined cap, in each quarter you activate.[2][1]
The original Chase Freedom isn't listed on Chase's Freedom card page today, but Chase still runs an FAQ for people who have it. That FAQ describes the same activation step, so these instructions apply if you hold the older card too.[2][3]
Freedom Unlimited works differently. Chase's comparison of the two cards says Freedom Flex earns faster in bonus categories, while Freedom Unlimited "offers consistent rates." Its page lists set earning rates instead: 5% on travel bought through Chase Travel, 3% on dining (including takeout and eligible delivery), 3% at drugstores, and 1.5% on other purchases. Chase doesn't list quarterly categories to turn on for this card. If you searched for Freedom Unlimited's "bonus categories," those set earning rates are the answer.[1][4]
How do you activate the 5% categories?
Chase lists several ways. Pick whichever you'll actually remember[5]:
- Online: go to chasebonus.com, or sign in to Chase Ultimate Rewards.
- Chase Mobile app: Chase says you can activate right in the app.
- Phone: call the number printed on the back of the card and ask a specialist to turn it on.
- In person: a personal banker at a Chase branch can do it.
- Chase ATM: Chase checking customers can activate while making a cash withdrawal.
- Email: sign up with Chase to get a reminder email when activation opens; Chase says it takes one click.
Chase says activation is free. You need to do it every three months, because each quarter is a new set of categories.[5]
When is the activation deadline?
Chase sets a deadline for every quarter and posts it in its Freedom Flex FAQ and on the activation page. We don't print the dates here, because they change with each quarter and an old date could mislead you. Look up the current deadline on Chase's site at the start of each quarter, and put it on your calendar.[5]
Chase also announces each quarter's categories when it's time to activate, so you'll know where 5% applies before you sign up.[5]
Do purchases made before you activate still count?
Yes, within the same quarter. Chase says that if you activate after the quarter starts, the 5% is applied retroactively, so category purchases from the first day of the quarter count once you activate by the deadline.[6]
One timing rule matters: a purchase has to post to your account by the last day of the quarter to qualify.[5]
How much can you earn at 5%?
The 5% rate has a cap. As of October 2026, Chase's Freedom Flex page says you earn 5% in the bonus categories up to a total of $1,500 in combined purchases each quarter. After that, Chase says you'll still earn 1% cash back. Chase can change the cap, so check the issuer.[6]
If you have more than one Freedom card, Chase says to activate each account. The cap applies to each account separately.[5]
What happens if you forget to activate?
Chase says that if you don't activate by the deadline, you won't earn 5% in that quarter's bonus categories. Those purchases still earn the card's regular 1%, but the extra is gone for that quarter. You can activate again when the next quarter's categories open.[5][7]
How do you get real value from rotating categories?
- Sign up for the reminder so activation isn't left to memory.
- Match categories to spending you already planned. Buying extra just to reach the cap turns a bonus into a cost.
- Track your progress toward the cap and switch to another card once you reach it.
- Pay the full statement balance every month. Interest on a carried balance can wipe out the extra cash back.
