Who should pick which

By the Credit Cards for Rewards editorial team · How we evaluate cards

Both charge $250+ and come with lounge perks and no foreign transaction fee. The Platinum focuses its earn on flights and prepaid hotels through Amex Travel and adds broad lounge access, while the Reserve earns more widely on travel and dining.

Pick the Amex Platinum if…

  • Lounge access is the perk you care about most.
  • Most of your travel spend is airfare plus hotels you prepay on Amex Travel.
  • You're willing to enroll in credits and work through a long benefit list.

Pick the Chase Sapphire Reserve if…

  • You want stronger earn on restaurants as well as travel, not just flights and prepaid hotels.
  • Everyday purchases are a large share of your spending; the Platinum's everyday earn is weak.
  • You'd rather carry a Visa; the Platinum runs on the Amex network.

Bottom line

The Platinum's fee is one of the highest in our data and only makes sense if you use its credits and lounges. If that sounds like more upkeep than you'll do, the Reserve's wider earn is easier to put to work; credit details: check the issuer.
