Who should pick which

By the Credit Cards for Rewards editorial team · How we evaluate cards

Two premium cards with $250+ annual fees, lounge-style perks, transferable rewards and no foreign transaction fee. Venture X earns around 2x miles on everything, while the Reserve concentrates on higher travel and dining earn.

Pick the Capital One Venture X if…

  • You want one simple earn rate across all purchases instead of categories.
  • You're comfortable booking through Capital One Travel, since the travel credit is often tied to that portal.
  • You'd rather collect Capital One miles than Chase points.

Pick the Chase Sapphire Reserve if…

  • Travel and restaurants make up most of your card spending.
  • You prefer Chase Ultimate Rewards and its transfer partners. Current partner list: check the issuer.
  • You'll use credits that are often limited to specific merchants.

Bottom line

Our data lists both for excellent credit only, and neither fee is offset unless the credits actually get used. Choose the program whose redemptions you're willing to learn; current credit amounts and multipliers: check the issuer.
