Who should pick which

By the Credit Cards for Rewards editorial team · How we evaluate cards

Two Wells Fargo cards with no annual fee. Active Cash pays flat cash rewards of about 2% and charges a foreign transaction fee, while Autograph earns points in categories such as restaurants, travel, gas, transit, streaming and phone plans, with no foreign transaction fee.

Pick the Wells Fargo Active Cash if…

  • You want straightforward cash with nothing to track.
  • Your spending doesn't concentrate in Autograph's categories.
  • Groceries are a big expense; Autograph has no grocery bonus.

Pick the Wells Fargo Autograph if…

  • Commuting, gas and eating out make up much of your budget.
  • You travel abroad and want to avoid a foreign transaction fee.
  • You're fine with points and will check redemption values first.

Bottom line

They can also work as a pair: Autograph for its categories and trips abroad, Active Cash for everything else. Intro or balance transfer terms change often, so check the issuer.
