Who should pick which

By the Credit Cards for Rewards editorial team · How we evaluate cards

A category card with a fee in the $1–$99 band against a premium flat-miles card at $250+. Both earn transferable rewards and skip the foreign transaction fee, so the choice comes down to fee tolerance and Chase versus Capital One.

Pick the Chase Sapphire Preferred if…

  • You want bonus points on dining, gas, streaming, online groceries and Chase Travel.
  • Your credit is good but not yet excellent.
  • You'd rather keep the annual fee moderate while you learn how redemptions work.

Pick the Capital One Venture X if…

  • You prefer around 2x miles everywhere to tracking categories.
  • You'll book through Capital One Travel to use the travel credit.
  • You have excellent credit and want lounge-style perks; current lounge terms: check the issuer.

Bottom line

Venture X makes sense only if its credits get used; otherwise the Preferred costs less to hold. Credit amounts and travel multipliers change, so check the issuer before you apply.
